Keyboard shortcuts in Gmail are a set of pre-defined keys that can be used to perform various actions without using the mouse.
By using keyboard shortcuts, you can navigate Gmail more efficiently and save time in managing your emails
Steps to set up and use Gmail keyboard shortcuts for faster navigation
- Open Gmail and click on the gear icon in the top right corner.
- Click on "See all settings" from the drop-down menu.
- On the "Settings" page, click on the "Advanced" tab.
- Scroll down until you see the "Keyboard shortcuts" section.
- Now go back to the “General” section and enable Keyboard shortcuts on
- Click on "Save Changes" at the bottom of the page.
- Now you can use keyboard shortcuts to navigate your Gmail inbox. Here are some commonly used shortcuts:
- c: Compose a new message
- r: Reply to the selected message
- a: Reply-all to the selected message
- f: Forward the selected message
- e: Archive the selected message
- j: Move down to the next message
- k: Move up to the previous message
- n: Move to the next message in the conversation
- p: Move to the previous message in the conversation
- o or Enter: Open the selected message
- u: Return to the inbox
- / (Shift + 7): Search your inbox
- ! (Shift + 1): Mark the selected message as spam
- s: Star or unstar the selected message
- Shift + n: Update the conversation with new messages
- ]: Archive the selected message and move to the next one
- [: Archive the selected message and move to the previous one
These are just a few examples of the many keyboard shortcuts available in Gmail. You can find a full list of shortcuts by pressing the "?" key while in Gmail.
Once you have enabled keyboard shortcuts, you can use the "c" key to compose a new message. Make sure you are in the Gmail inbox and not in a message or another section of Gmail.
